General description

Shenkar is a public institution of higher education, supervised and funded by the Council for Higher Education. It was founded in 1970 in order to serve Israeli industry through the training of academic manpower and by providing industry with advanced services in research and development. Shenkar’s distinctiveness lies in the close connection between its two faculties: the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Design. Each faculty has its own character but they cooperate in different projects, enabling students to be exposed to different disciplines and fields of knowledge. The Faculty of Engineering has five departments that award the degree of Bachelor of Science: the Department of Chemical Engineering; the Department of Electronical Engineering; the Department of Software Engineering, the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management and the Department of Plastics Engineering. Recently, Shenkar received permission from the Council for Higher Education to award the degree of Master of Science in plastics engineering. The Faculty of Design has six departments that award the degree of Bachelor of Design (B.Des.): the Department of Visual Communication, the Department of Textile Design, the Department of Interior, Structural and Environmental Design, the Department of Jewelry Design, the Department of Industrial Design and the Department of Fashion Design, which is considered one of the best in the world. In addition, in 2008 Shenkar opened a Department of Multi-Disciplinary Art that offers a unique program of study and awards the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.).
